THEIR ORIGIN:
M. Toichi Itoh of Japan was the first to succeed with this cross creating the first herbaceous type peonies with truly yellow flowers. The peonies ¬Yellow Crown¬ and ¬Yellow Heaven¬, more known in the market, are the result of this first cross. Thereafter, this work of hybridization between tree and herbaceous peonies has been pursued by other breeders to create a new lineage of hybrids: the intersectionals (Itohs).
These new peonies are exceptionals! Great vigor, easy of culture and extremely rustic; their rusticity having been demonstrated at least in zone 3 (Canadian), here in Chicoutimi. Their foliage die down to the fall after frostand emerge again the following spring. We can easily propagate them by division. All features characteristics of an herbaceous peony, maternal inheritance!
These new hybrids are robust, with a remarkable port. The stems are rigid and do not require any staking. They keep their shape and their tonus and don't collapse under the weight of the flowers. Their foliage remains beautiful during the whole season and is more resistant to the fall frost than the herbaceous one. All features inherited from the paternal shrubby side.

Contrasting flares in these peony centers: Pastel Splendor, Court Jester and Cora Louise.. |
But what makes them so special, is the magnificent beauty of their flowers with their extended range of colors and shapes. Yellows of different tones, mixes of yellow and red or rose, pure white with the purple·. with very often, a constrasting stain at the basis of the petals. All intersectionals hybrids have fragrant flowers. And last bonus: these hybrids have a longer flowering period that can last from midseason to late season.
All my plants of Intersectional hybrids have been bought from the breeders Roger Anderson et Don Hollingsworth. I sell only divisions of these mature plants cultivate in the field and well adapted to our canadian winter. None of them are from In vitro propagation.
