About Pivoines Capano?
VIRTUAL VISIT (in French): <La Semaine Verte, Sept 16th, 2007 >
Pivoines Capano is Canadian peony nursery growing & breeding peonies (PAEONIA). We cultivate winter hardy intersectional hybrids (Itoh), herbaceous (lactifloras & hybrids) and species peonies. Our peony nursery grows nearly 450 varieties including the yellows Bartzella, Garden Treasure and Prairie Moon, the fernleaf peony (Paeonia tenuifolia) and a splendid collection of professor Saunder's hybrids.
For me, Mano Capano, the owner (I am a lady even if my name sounds a little masculine), I am absolutely passionnate about peonies. This is why, in 2000, I have transformed my passion into a business. Pivoines Capano is a mail order nursery that sells peonies divisions directly to gardeners. We are also Specialty Peony Cut Flowers Grower for wholesalers, designers and high-end florists.
We are located in the city of Chicoutimi, Quebec, Canada. Our peonies can be shipped everywhere in the world. I made an opportunity by the fact that I live in a region with a rigorous climate (Canadian zone 3). This way, I can offer peony roots with a <<cold proof>> stamp to my customers! And our Northern location allows us to harvest our peony cut flowers until mid-July, whereas blooming is over elsewhere.
Mission
Our mission in propagating and selling high quality peonies is to lead you to a rediscovery of the wonderful world of peonies.
Well known by our grand-mothers, my beloved peonies suffers from a huge misknowledge i.e short flowering period and too fine stems for the heavy big double flowers. We have to change this perception that does not represent the reality! There is more than 3000 varieties/species of peonies and they do not bloom at the same time. Blooming can last more than seven weeks if you select carefully your varieties.
And, today, thanks to the work of several passionate breeders, the world of peonies has evolved. We have now access to peonies with strong stems that do not need to be supported by a ring of stake. Marvelous new colors now exist on the market: the yellows, coral-salmon and may be some day we will see peonies with blue flowers....These new peonies has kept their extreme rusticity, their easiness of culture and their longevity, all features of these magnificent perennials.
As
I did, you will rediscover them and fall in love!
Our beloved peonies
Our peonies are true to name and come from recognized sources or directly from the breeders. All my intersectional hybrids (Itoh) have been bought directly from the breeders Roger Anderson et Don Hollingsworth who has been growing them in the field and propagating them by division of these mature plants. I exclusively sell divisions from these mature plants that has been growing in my field and that are well adapted to our canadian winter (zone 3). None of them came from In Vitro propagation.
Unless otherwise indicated, we sell bare roots
divisions with a minimum of 3 to 5 eyes on the crown. Our peonies
are divided and shipped in the fall, directly to the gardeners.
We do not offer wholesales prices.

Visit of the nursery
Unfortunately, we can no longer open the nursery to visitors during blooming time. Blooming season here is extremely busy because of the peony cut flowers business. So visits and the business of cut flowers are for the moment uncompatible. This is why I put so many pictures on the website, to help you figure the beauty of my peony flowers.
I am also extremely difficult to join by phone because I work outside, in open fields, on the farm with no phone. The electronic mail is the most efficient way to communicate with me: manocapano@pivoinescapano.com.
